Samoa Joe has returned to WWE NXT.

The former NXT champion, who was released by WWE on April 15, has returned to the black-and-gold brand just two months later and will work as general manager William Regal's assistant and protector.

An emotional Regal opened this week's episode of NXT, after announcing a 'change' was coming at the close of TakeOver: In Your House. He said that, due to the chaos, he felt he was no longer capable of giving the fans what they deserve.

The GM was then interrupted by NXT Champion Karrion Kross, who wanted to take credit for Regal running away. Kross would demand Regal fall and pray, only for Joe to make his return to the brand.

Joe was offered the chance to become NXT's new general manager by Regal, which he turned down. The 42-year-old did, however, suggest working with Regal as his assistant. Regal agreed, saying that Joe could not be an in-ring competitor or physically attack any superstars unless he was provoked.

Joe has not wrestled since February 2020 due to injuries, believed to be concussion related. The former United States Champion was working as colour commentator on Monday Night Raw prior to his release from WWE in April.
