Report: WWE Considered Creating New World Title At WrestleMania 39
WWE considered creating a new world title for WrestleMania 39
Feb 7, 2023
The Rock reportedly won't be wrestling at WrestleMania 39 but WWE had big plans if The Great One wanted to return to the squared circle at the Show of Shows.
It was noted by WrestlingNews.co back in December that if The Rock wrestled at Mania, he would have faced Roman Reigns. Their report claimed that WWE would have split the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, though, so The Rock would have challenged for the Universal belt while Seth Rollins and either Drew McIntyre or Cody Rhodes would have clashed for the WWE Title.
In an update, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE would have kept the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on Reigns and instead created a new world title for Seth Rollins and either Cody Rhodes or Drew McIntyre to clash over.
"If it was Roman and The Rock, they were gonna create a championship on Saturday night that Cody probably would have ended up winning. But it was Cody, Drew or Rollins that was gonna come out of that one. Because they wanna go back to two titles...Obviously, at WrestleMania, it's for both belts. They did explain, again they did say it's now two belts again. It's not one belt. It's back to two belts. They are, at some point, going to separate them," Meltzer said.
The scheduled main event of WrestleMania 39 will see Cody Rhodes challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Rhodes earned the match by winning the Men's Royal Rumble in his in-ring return on January 28.
