An emotional Johnny Gargano appeared to say 'goodbye' to WWE NXT on this week's show, admitting that he doesn't know what is in his immediate future.

Gargano took to the NXT ring at the conclusion of the December 7 episode and ran through his journey in NXT, highlighting how he initially failed his tryout with WWE in 2015 but was brought back by William Regal, and would go on to main-event multiple TakeOvers.

The 'Rebel Heart' would say he's been in NXT for so long because of his love for it and belief in the brand, before shouting out Triple H and Shawn Michaels as being his family and hailing the likes of Matt Bloom, Steve Corino, Vic Joseph and others.

Speaking on his future, Gargano added: "Change is scary, but sometimes it needs to happen. You will never fail if you bet on yourself.

"I don't know what my immediate future holds. That's up in the air right now. I may do some things here and there, but I do know one thing is for sure; in February, I'm going to do the most important job of my life. I'm going to be a dad."

The segment came to an end as Gargano was attacked from behind by Grayson Waller, who hit the former NXT Champion with a chair before wrapping it around his neck and throwing him into the steel steps. Gargano was then powerbombed through a table.

Gargano's appearance at NXT WarGames and subsequent promo on this week's NXT have been treated as his 'swan song' with the brand, with multiple references to him departing NXT.

It is not known if Gargano is leaving WWE altogether or not at this stage. His contract with the promotion was due to run out last week, prior to WarGames, but he reportedly penned a one-week extension.
