After a bizarre night one, WWE presented night two of WrestleMania 42 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Could WWE redeem WrestleMania 42? Let's find out.
This is WWE WrestleMania 42 Night 2 GRADED!
Oba Femi def. Brock Lesnar (4:45)
John Cena - as the host - once again opened WrestleMania 42 and received boos after announcing the first hour of the show was live on ESPN. He then welcomed fans to WrestleMania and promised the show would begin with something big, which was the cue for lots of fireworks and Oba Femi to make his entrance.
After Brock Lesnar also made his way to the ring, the bell rang and the action started with a collar-and-elbow tie-up won by neither man. Once they locked up again, Oba won, pushing Brock away, before Lesnar picked up the two-time NXT Champion and drove his shoulder into Femi's mid-section in the corner. Femi simply shrugged Lesnar to the mat, though, before he no-sold two Lariats from Brock, which forced Lesnar to retreat to the outside.
Femi tried to remain on the offence but Lesnar dragged him to the outside and bounced Oba into the ring post and then the steel steps. Once they returned to the ring, Lesnar hit his opponent with three German Suplexes before Oba blocked a fourth and hit two running Uppercuts, but he ran straight into an F5.
Femi got back to his feet seconds later, though, and hit a Chokeslam before the Fall from Grace for the sudden 1-2-3. Oba Femi defeats Brock Lesnar in decisive fashion.
Post-match, Lesnar didn't get back to his feet until after Oba Femi had made his way to the back. When he did, Lesnar removed his gloves and boots, leaving them in the middle of the ring, before he embraced Paul Heyman. Lesnar then waved to the crowd as he and Paul Heyman struggled to hold back tears, before they made their way to the back.
Grade: A - A great beginning to WrestleMania 42 Sunday as WWE put over Oba Femi in a big way, having him defeat Brock Lesnar in decisive fashion. That it was seemingly Lesnar's final match of his in-ring career made it all the more of an effective way to elevate Femi as what Michael Cole billed as the Next Big Thing.
Penta (c) def. Je'Von Evans, Dragon Lee, Rey Mysterio, JD McDonagh & Rusev - Ladder Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship (15:10)
The in-ring action began quickly for the second match of the night, but the opening minutes were primarily dominated by Rusev outside of a Je'Von Evans dive to the outside and Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio having a fun exchange, much to the delight of the fans inside Allegiant Stadium.
After Penta blocked Rusev from winning with a Bulldog from the ladder, JD McDonagh looked set to win until he was wiped out by a Springboard Clothesline from Je'Von Evans. Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio then re-entered the ring and Rey delivered a 619 while Lee's head was stuck in the ladder.
The carnage continued as Penta hit a Suplex to Evans on a ladder, while Lee hit a Double Stomp to Mysterio while Rey found himself dangling from a ladder.
Later, Rey Mysterio hit a Penta-assisted West Coast Pop to Rusev on the outside, sending them crashing through a ladder draped between the ring and the announce table. Mysterio followed up with a 619 to Penta in the ring and he grappled with Dragon Lee over the Intercontinental Championship before Mysterio dived straight into a Styles Clash.
JD McDonagh and Dragon Lee next battled on the ladder which resulted in a Spanish Fly from the structure by McDonagh. Penta and JD then exchanged punches on the top of the ladder before Penta hit a Canadian Destroyer to another ladder next to them as the fans chanted, "Holy sh*t!"
With everyone done, Je'Von Evans scaled the ladder and he was left dangling from the belt until he was pulled down by Rusev. The former Miro then received boos as he climbed the ladder but he was wiped out by an OG Cutter from Je'Von Evans. Before Evans could capitalise, Penta hit another Canadian Destroyer and he scaled the ladder to record the successful title defence.
Grade: A - An easy A grade for the second match of the evening as all six men delivered on the big stage and had the opportunity to shine. They produced another great Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania, following in the footsteps of WrestleMania X, 31, and 32. Probably the correct winner too, as Penta remains as popular as ever with WWE's audience.
Trick Williams def. Sami Zayn (c) - WWE United States Championship (8:50)
Trick Williams had a big entrance as the challenger accompanied by Lil Yachty, having probably the longest train in WrestleMania history since Braun Strowman ran around the ring.
Once the match got underway, Trick Williams was in control in the early going, recording a near fall with a Book End. Sami Zayn then fired back with a Blue Thunder Bomb when he avoided the Trick Knee, but, again, it was only enough for a two count.
Zayn followed up by simply punching the challenger straight in the face, before he kicked him over and over again. Zayn then generated boos by attacking Lil Yachty while he gave Trick a pep talk in the ropes. Williams had time to recover but it didn't matter as Zayn bounced Trick's head off the ring post over and over again before an Apron Brainbuster. Once Trick got back to his feet on the outside, Zayn sent him back to the floor with a Helluva Kick.
Zayn looked to record the count-out win but Williams got back to the ring by the count of nine to big cheers inside Allegiant Stadium. Zayn was about to deck Williams with a Helluva Kick but Lil Yachty interfered while the referee wasn't looking which allowed Williams to hit a big boot, but it was only enough for a near fall.
Zayn then caught Williams on another Trick Shot attempt and fired him into the corner with an Exploder Suplex. As Sami looked to connect with another Helluva Kick, Williams decked the champion with a Trick Shot out of nowhere for the 1-2-3. Williams celebrated with his mother and father post-match.
Grade: B- - A fun match with the right result as Sami Zayn dominated much of the action, allowing the popular Trick Williams to fight from underneath and ultimately capture the United States Title. The only negative is that it was relatively short and a pretty simple match overall, although that may be a good thing as Williams has looked better when his matches have been under 10 minutes.
"The Demon" Finn Balor def. Dominik Mysterio - Street Fight (12:58)
Two big entrances for the next match as Dominik Mysterio came out on a throne with a whole lot of luchadors, while Balor, obviously, came out as the Demon and immediately got caught up in a whole load of streamers.
Dominik Mysterio looked completely creeped out as Balor crawled around the ring and Balor dominated the early going, bashing his opponent with a kendo stick. Finn removed a table from under the ring, but this allowed Dom to recover and connect with a Suicide Dive, before he battered Balor with the kendo stick.
Dominik remained on top, hitting Balor with a steel chair over and over again. He then set up two chairs in the ring but Balor blocked a Suplex and picked Dom up, throwing him into the chairs. Dom regained control quickly, though, and connected with a 619 before a Frog Splash, only for Balor to kick out at one.
Balor hit multiple Shotgun Dropkicks soon after and went for the Coup de Grace but Dom dodged it and hit his former Judgment Day stablemate with a steel chair shot, but it was only enough for two. Dom then sent Balor through a table and decked him from behind with another steel chair shot.
Mysterio then hit a 619 while a steel chair was around Balor's neck and Mysterio followed up with a second Frog Splash but Finn kicked out at two again.
Dominik grew frustrated and battered Balor with steel chair shot after steel chair shot, before he retrieved another table from under the ring. The crowd was absolutely dead for this match, though, and they didn't even pop at the introduction of another table, only booing when it fell over.
After Mysterio objected to the crowd, Balor popped back up and proceeded to batter Dominik with several steel chair shots. He then placed a steel chair around Mysterio's neck and hit him with a Shotgun Dropkick into the corner. With Dom lying across the table, the Demon hit a Coup de Grace for the win.
Grade: C+ - Both Dominik Mysterio and Finn Balor worked hard in their Street Fight at WrestleMania 42, using kendo sticks, tables, and steel chairs with abandon, but the match was really hampered by the crowd, who didn't seem to care about what was happening inside the squared circle. The audience largely sat there in silence and only really made any noise when they booed at a table falling over while it was being set up by Dominik.
Rhea Ripley def. Jade Cargill (c) - WWE Women's Championship (10:09)
Jade Cargill took control in the opening minutes and methodically worked over Rhea Ripley with power moves, recording a near fall following a Spin-Out Powerbomb. Cargill then applied a Crossface but Ripley fought out and they began exchanging forearms in the centre of the ring, with Ripley getting the better of the exchange with a Dropkick.
Ripley followed up with an Alabama Slam for a near fall. Ripley looked to connect with Riptide but Jade avoided it and fought back with a Spinebuster for another two count. Cargill set up for Jaded but Ripley rolled through and recorded another near fall.
Cargill then went for a Powerbomb but Ripley countered with a Hurricanrana and a Running Knee and set up for the Razor's Edge but Michin distracted the referee which allowed B-Fab to pull the champion to safety. Michin then booted Ripley's head into the ring post while Cargill distracted the referee.
Cargill followed up with a One Winged Angel but she lacked the technique of Kenny Omega as Ripley kicked out at two. B-Fab and Michin then looked set to attack Ripley again until IYO SKY ran down the ramp to make the save, taking out the lackies with an Asai Moonsault.
Back in the ring, Ripley went for a Riptide but Cargill dodged it and went for Jaded, only for Ripley to avoid it and finally connect with a Riptide for the victory and to become the new WWE Women's Champion.
Grade: C - An enjoyable enough match, although it never felt like it really got out of second gear. The closing sequence was fun, however, and Rhea Ripley being a champion again in WWE was probably the right call.
Danhausen and a Gang of Little People take down The Miz & Kit Wilson
Before the main event, John Cena announced the night two attendance of 55,255 for a two-night attendance of 106,072. John Cena was then about to give a heartfelt thank you but he was interrupted by The Miz and Kit Wilson.
This brought out Danhausen and a whole lot of "midgets", which is what the group wanted to be referred to as according to Michael Cole on commentary. Kit Wilson then pushed over a midget before a different midget punched him in the nether regions. The gang of midgets then beat down Kit Wilson before Danhausen punched The Miz in the nether regions and hit a Five Knuckle Shuffle. The midgets then carried The Miz to the back like The Undertaker's druids.
With Danhausen and Cena in the ring, a puff of smoke went off and Danhausen was forced to run under the ring after the midgets dropped The Miz on the ramp.
John Cena then said retired life is awesome before he announced the main event was next.
Grade: E - A comedic palette cleanser before the main event in a segment that was designed to be intentionally rubbish. I'm sure some people found it funny, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Roman Reigns def. CM Punk (c) - World Heavyweight Championship (33:57)
After some big entrances, the match began as every major Roman Reigns match does...extremely slowly, with Reigns being on top for much of the early going as he taunted the World Heavyweight Champion.
Reigns went for an early Superman Punch but Punk dodged it and finally got in some offence with a Crossbody and punches to the face of Reigns. Following a Running Bulldog, Punk called for the Go To Sleep but Reigns fought out of it and sent Punk into the ring post. A Superman Punch followed, but it was only enough for a near fall.
Reigns then went to set up for a Spear with his big "OOOAAAH" shout but this only allowed Punk to connect with a Running Knee and then a second one. Punk followed up with a Suicide Dive, driving Reigns into the announce table, before the champion mockingly posed over the prone challenger.
Punk then teased hitting an Elbow Drop from the top rope to the announce table but Reigns recovered and raced to stop Punk, which led to Reigns teeing off on the World Heavyweight Champion while Punk was stuck hanging in the ropes. Three Superman Punches followed as Punk remained hanging upside down, with Punk bleeding from the mouth.
Out of nowhere, Roman Reigns hit CM Punk with the steel steps but the referee didn't call for the bell to end the match with a DQ win for CM Punk despite the main event of WrestleMania simply being a straight singles match. The steel steps shot left Punk's head pouring with blood and Reigns took advantage, sending Punk crashing through the announce table with a Powerbomb.
Once the action returned to the ring, Roman Reigns went for a Spear but he ran straight into a GTS from CM Punk, but it was only enough for a two count. Punk went for another GTS but Roman escaped and connected with a Spear but, just like Punk, it was only enough for two.
Reigns went for a GTS but Punk blocked it and hit a Roundhouse Kick for another near fall. Punk then loaded up his fist and hit a Superman Punch, before Punk grabbed a replica Ula Fala from a fan at ringside and placed it around his neck. Punk then went for a Spear but ran straight into a Guillotine from Reigns. He was quickly able to escape, though, and Punk locked in the Anaconda Vice, with Reigns reversing it into a Guillotine. Punk managed to counter the submission into a pin, with Reigns getting his shoulder up at 2.9.
After both men got to their feet, they were both back on the mat seconds later after Clotheslining each other at the same time. They next exchanged punches, chops, jumping knees, and headbutts before they both collapsed to the mat once again.
Next, Punk distracted the official by throwing his tape across the ring which provided the opening for the champion to deliver a Low Blow and a GTS. The fans inside Allegiant Stadium thought that was it but Reigns kicked out at 2.9. Punk looked to stay on top with a Flying Elbow to Reigns through the announce table and he managed to connect, causing the table to collapse in the process.
Once the match went back to the ring, Punk hit a third GTS and Reigns toppled off the ropes and back onto Punk's shoulders, but Punk couldn't hit a fourth GTS as the champion simply collapsed to the mat. Reigns was able to capitalise with another Spear, which prompted both tired men to stare at each other as they rose back to their feet. 10 seconds later and Reigns delivered another Spear for the win. Roman Reigns ends WrestleMania 42 as the new World Heavyweight Champion.
Grade: A+ - A fantastic main event that was worthy of headlining any WrestleMania that kept fans on the edge of their seat, with even the typical slow Roman Reigns beginning for a major match being much shorter than usual. Despite Reigns being the heavy favourite, it really felt like the match could have gone either way down the stretch and both competitors were at the top of their game. The only negative was the bizarre steel steps shot to the face from Reigns that didn't result in a DQ from the official, despite it being a straight singles match.
Show Grade: B+ - A much better event than what WWE provided fans with on night one saw a great opening hour and a fantastic main event, but the show became bogged down during the middle three matches. Overall, though, it was an entertaining night of pro wrestling.
