Westin Blake: Why Vince McMahon Doesn't Like Cowboy Gimmicks

From Bob Orton to James Storm to Stan Hansen, professional wrestling's history is littered with cowboy gimmicks.

Westin Blake (FKA Wesley Blake) looked to join the illustrious list with a cowboy gimmick of his own upon making his NXT debut in January 2014. The persona didn't quite click on the black and gold brand, though, and the former Forgotten Son dropped the character eight months later and formed a tag team with Buddy Murphy.

Blake recently discussed the character with The Angle Podcast and revealed the persona was nixed because Vince McMahon doesn't like cowboy gimmicks.

"After about 6 months, I kind of got the impression or I was told that, 'Hey Vince McMahon doesn't really like cowboys. He thinks it's kind of overdone, especially in the wrestling business. We are going to have to switch up your character and pitching some more ideas," said Blake.

While Vince McMahon may think the gimmick has been overdone, cowboys remain popular in wrestling to this day, with the likes of James Storm and "Hangman" Adam Page active in IMPACT Wrestling and AEW.
