Update On The Rock's Post-WWE WrestleMania 40 Plans
The Rock to be gone for much of 2024
Apr 5, 2024
Although The Rock will be in the main event of WWE WrestleMania 40 night one on Saturday, April 6, Dwayne Johnson looks set to be away from WWE for much of 2024.
Nick Khan explained on 'The Town' that after filming of A24's 'Smashing Machine', Dwayne Johnson will work on the live-action 'Moana'. This will ultimately reduce the amount of time The Rock is able to commit to WWE over the next several months.
"Listen, here's what I know. Our fans love him. I think he loves our fans. Wrestling's in his blood. Third generation. But that was the whole thing. No question, by the way, it's one of the great career pivots that I've seen. So even, you talk about the kids movies, he was also like in the Get Shorty sequel. Which, if you're like, I didn't even know there was a Get Shorty sequel. He was in that. He had slimmed down considerably. It wasn't the right role for him. And boom, he came back as, okay, I'm going to be the leading man who I am. [His next film] Smashing Machine. So it's his first, I think from what I understand, like not a hundred million dollar picture since he's become a big megastar. So he goes into that a week or two after WrestleMania. Yeah. And then goes into live Moana after that, which knock on wood should be a big hit," Khan said.
While he might not be on-screen, Dwayne Johnson will remain involved with WWE beyond WrestleMania through his spot on the TKO Board of Directors.
"I'm not off the board after WrestleMania. I'm still on the board, and I will always be a part of this. And we are in it now. This is our thing and will forever be our thing," The Rock told Brian Gewirtz while speaking to ESPN.
"But I do think there's going to be a Rock presence in WWE going forward until whenever he doesn't want to...I could definitely say that this isn't [over a] day after WrestleMania and I'm going to go off into the sunset now," Gewirtz added.
In the main event of WrestleMania Saturday, The Rock will team with Roman Reigns against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins.
