Could WWE finally secure a working relationship with New Japan Pro-Wrestling?

Three years after their last discussions over a possible arrangement, it emerged in recent days that WWE have spoken internally about possibly trying to work out a deal with NJPW following the appointment of Hiroshi Tanahashi as the promotion's president.

In an update, Fightful Select have reported that WWE have long maintained an interest in forming some sort of connection with New Japan. Neither WWE nor NJPW think any deal is likely, however, due to the strong working relationship that is already in place between New Japan and All Elite Wrestling. Tony Khan's promotion and NJPW have exchanged talent since 2021 and they have co-promoted the Forbidden Door pay-per-view in 2022 and 2023.

With Hiroshi Tanahashi's appointment as NJPW President and new ownership in WWE, a possible partnership between the two companies is still considered "at least more likely than it has been in a long time", even if a deal is still unlikely.

The renewed talk of a WWE-NJPW deal comes after WWE worked with All Japan Pro-Wrestling to send Charlie Dempsey to Japan for an AJPW Triple Crown Title match against Katsuhiko Nakajima. The Triple Crown Champion then teased an appearance on WWE NXT following the match. Rumours have noted WWE are looking to ally with a women's promotion as well, with Stardom earmarked as a possible partner.
