WWE kicked off the NXT 2.0 era with several debuts and the likes of Bron Breakker, Von Wagner and Brooks Jensen all made their first appearances on WWE TV.

WWE also debuted a new Mafia-like gimmick on NXT 2.0 with Tony D'Angelo, an Italian amateur wrestler from the streets of Chicago. D'Angelo noted in a pre-taped vignette that his family filled with businessmen have interests in the fish and meat markets, and waste management, referencing The Sopranos. He found success in amateur wrestling, though, and he has arrived in NXT because there is no real money to be on the amateur scene.

WWE then announced D'Angelo would be "coming soon" to NXT 2.0 as the vignette came to an end.

D'Angelo is 25-year-old Joe Ariola from Oak Park, Illinois. He was an undefeated state and national champion in amateur wrestling while in high school. He wrestled at the University of Buffalo in college and he qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2016.

He signed with WWE in February 2021.
