WWE and Ric Flair were involved in a battle over 'The Man' trademark back in 2019, months after Becky Lynch started using the term. The Nature Boy filed two trademarks for 'The Man' in August 2019 and he later revealed he had been pursuing WWE for royalties for their use of the term on TV.

The matter was eventually settled in May 2020 after Flair sold the trademarks to WWE for an undisclosed amount shortly after he had signed a new contract with the company.

Flair at one point thought the whole episode had unintended consequences for his standing backstage and he revealed to Conrad Thompson that he was concerned Roman Reigns had lost respect for him.

"I was concerned that I had lost the respect of Roman Reigns. Because when that whole 'Man' thing went upside down and all that and I had to file the trademark, whatever transpired, it means nothing now. I think people, I heard that he... and I walked right up to him. I said, 'Can I have a minute of your time?' and I said, 'Hey, it means a lot to me.' I mean, you want the kids [current WWE Superstars] to look forward to you coming, not, 'Oh man, here he comes again.' Does that make sense? Especially when you have a daughter who is at the most elite position she could be in," Flair said.

Since 'The Man' situation came to an end, Flair has had two short runs as a manager, first alongside Randy Orton and then with Lacey Evans.
