Report: Update On Why WWE SummerSlam Is Scheduled For A Saturday

WWE announced this week that the 2021 SummerSlam will be taking place on Saturday, August 21. This would make the show the first SummerSlam to be held outside of a Sunday since 1994.
According to Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, the reason for the day change is because the decision-makers at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium (the once-presumed location of the event) wanted it to be held on a Saturday.
However, there's now a date conflict in play: a fight pitting Manny Pacquiao against Errol Spence Jr for the WBC and IBF welterweight titles is taking place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas on the same night. The fight figures to be a considerable pay-per-view draw.
"The reason it's a Saturday is because the stadium in Vegas wanted a Saturday," Meltzer said. "However, it may not be in Vegas, but they already have got the date.
"When they made the call on the date change, the fight wasn't there."
As of now, Vegas doesn't appear to be WWE's choice for a SummerSlam location. However, nothing has changed regarding the date, as is currently known.
Meltzer added of the potential location, "It was in Vegas, and then something changed in the last week or so. It may be the Pacquiao fight being there is what changed. Vegas is not out of the running, but I don't think it's the prime choice."
WWE is expected to formally announce SummerSlam's location on Saturday, June 5, during the Belmont Stakes pre-show.
