WWE management reportedly decided to have Roman Reigns win in the main event of WrestleMania 37 in order to protect him for bigger money matches to come.

Reigns retained the Universal Championship in a classic Triple Threat Match against Edge and Daniel Bryan on Night Two of WrestleMania 37 on Sunday, meaning the established heel in the story was the big winner other returning legend - and Royal Rumble winner - Edge and established face Bryan.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer is reporting that the decision was made to protect Reigns rather than 'sending the fans home happy' to close WrestleMania 37, with WWE casting their eye towards three potential big-money matches for The Tribal Chief in the future.

WWE believe the biggest money they can make from any match going forward comes from putting Reigns up against one of three opponents: The Rock, Brock Lesnar, or John Cena. As such, the promotion determined it would be better to keep Reigns protected with one of those three matches in mind.

Meltzer notes that WWE could have taken the belt off Reigns at WrestleMania 37 and had him win it back later and the buy rate of any of those three potential matches would be largely unaffected.

Reigns has previously faced Lesnar in singles actions on a number of occasions, most notably in the main-events of WrestleMania 31 (before Seth Rollins' late addition) and WrestleMania 34, as well as SummerSlam 2018.

Reigns also battled, and defeated, John Cena at No Mercy 2017 in a 'WrestleMania-worthy' match that was booked at that time due to Cena's uncertain schedule.

A match with The Rock has been largely touted for The Head Of The Table, with many speculating that the bout will go down at WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles.
