Report: John Cena's Apology To China Not Well Received By WWE
The apology has led to significant backlash
May 26, 2021
John Cena's recent video apology to the people of China has reportedly not been well received by many within WWE.
Cena issued a video apology on his Sina Weibo account after calling Taiwan a country during a recent interview, as a part of his promotional tour advertising his newest film. Beijing argues that democratically-run Taiwan is part of its territory.
The 44-year-old's statement, however, has not been taken well within WWE. Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast wrote on Twitter that: "This John Cena apology is NOT going over well at WWE right now..."
Cena's apology has split opinion with his Chinese fan-base too. The 16-time WWE champion, while saying sorry that he 'made a mistake' in an interview, did not specify exactly what he was apologising for, nor did he state explicitly that Taiwan was a Chinese territory, as many Weibo users pushed him to do.
The apology and ongoing situation has, however, led to others from the world of professional wrestling getting involved.
Former WWE superstar - and long-time Cena rival - CM Punk had updated his Twitter bio with the phrase: "Taiwan is a country." However, it should be noted that Punk has since changed again.
