After being away from WWE TV since WrestleMania 39 in early April, Drew McIntyre made his return during the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, much to the delight of the fans inside The O2 in London, England.

McIntyre headed to the ring following GUNTHER's successful defence of the Intercontinental Championship against Matt Riddle and the two men came face-to-face. After a couple of comments, GUNTHER pushed McIntyre in the face, only for Irn Dru to fire back with a Glasgow Kiss and Claymore Kick. Drew then held aloft the Intercontinental Title, signalling his plans to challenge for the gold in the near future.

There has been much uncertainty around Drew McIntyre's long-term future with WWE during his time away, with reports signalling Drew's deal expires in early 2024 (although WWE can extend it due to injury time) and both sides were far apart on money. McIntyre's return was also being held up while both sides agreed on creative.

In an update, PWInsider Elite has reported that WWE wanted McIntyre to return by Money in the Bank but him coming back was held up by McIntyre wanting a strong storyline for his return. The two sides were able to work out an agreement over the past few days for McIntyre to feud with GUNTHER and Drew will be back on Raw from the July 3 show.

Despite McIntyre's return, his contractual status has not changed. He and WWE have yet to agree on a contract extension and his deal is still set to expire in early 2024. The two sides have yet to enter renewed talks over a new deal as there are still several months until his contract comes up.

Triple H addressed McIntyre's WWE future during the post-Money in the Bank press conference, saying the following:

"It's also a funny thing, the amount of speculation that happens around things. I read stuff all the time that's printed and put out there. 'Sources say.' 75% of it is completely off base. If Drew had an issue, it's news to me. He was out with an injury and getting stuff fixed. While he was out, he had something else to get fixed so we did it, and here he is. He's an amazing performer. He is one of the highlight superstars in this era. Thrilled to have him back and hopefully, he's here for the rest of his career."
