Cody Rhodes’ loss to Roman Reigns shook the WWE Universe following WrestleMania 39, and following not only news of a WWE sale but a return to a more active role both from a business perspective and creative perspective for Vince McMahon, there was speculation that these changes led to the decision to have him lose. However, this reportedly wasn’t the case.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cody Rhodes losing the match was always going to happen;

"Reigns winning was always the plan, although it was kept secret and almost nobody knew.”

It isn’t clear if Rhodes found out on the day or earlier, but either way it was a result that proved to be a contentious one. Rhodes is now set for a feud with a newly heel Brock Lesnar on WWE Raw, in what was supposedly always going to be the post-Mania plans for the pair. Reigns will continue his run with the gold, and due to his part-time schedule, it is all but confirmed that he will surpass 1000 days as world champion.
