WWE released longtime Superstar Steve Cutler last night after seven years with the company.

The former Forgotten Son posted a short statement on Twitter following WWE's announcement, writing: "Unfortunately, today I was released. It was shocking, to say the least. But, I am excited about the future and all the possibilities in front of me. Thanks for your continued support. 90 days... the countdown begins."

Before his release, Cutler had recently resurfaced on Friday Night SmackDown as one of Baron Corbin's Knights Of The Lone Wolf. He and Wesley Blake disappeared from WWE TV again in early January, though, and Deonna Purrazzo has since revealed she and Cutler tested positive for COVID-19 around this time.

Cutler's positive COVID-19 test meant he was unable to appear on WWE TV and Fightful Select has reported this resulted in the Superstar having heat with Vince McMahon. Those Fightful spoke to seem to believe Cutler was released by WWE because of this situation.

Both Cutler and Blake tried to return to WWE TV after their brief spell on the sidelines in January, but they ultimately weren't brought back.

The former Forgotten Son had recently been active at the WWE Performance Center as he offered to help out and take bumps during the "big man" class. He was said to be well-liked and a welcome familiar face at the facility.

What's next for Cutler ultimately remains to be seen, but Fightful noted the "door is open" for a WWE return down the line.
