Back on April 15, WWE released 37 Superstars including Drake Maverick, Doc Gallows, Karl Anderson, Lio Rush, Rusev, and Sarah Logan. Nine producers were also furloughed while Kurt Angle and Mike Chioda were let go. The releases came after the company announced they would be making cutbacks because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the moments after his release, Drake Maverick posted a tearful video on social media in which he announced he would still be competing in the NXT Cruiserweight Championship Tournament and that he would give fans everything he has in what could be his last three matches.

The video quickly developed into a storyline on NXT as Maverick wrestled to keep his job, and while he lost to El Hijo Del Fantasma in the final, Spud signed a new contract with the wrestling behemoth to end this week's episode of the black and gold brand.

Released WWE Superstar Lio Rush was upset that WWE would use their releases in an angle and voiced his displeasure on social media.

The Man Of The Hour tweeted: "Man....Are they going to hire everyone back then? Kind of a slap in the face to use this as a shoot work. But I guess I'm not surprised. Super happy for anyone getting there job back. But damn, real trauma and a lot of others were apart of this."
