On this day in 1997, WWE presented SummerSlam: Hart And Soul.
WWE's biggest party of the summer emanated from East Rutherford, New Jersey - WWE's first televised show from the state in almost a decade - and was main-evented by a WWE Championship match which featured Shawn Michaels as a guest referee.
A reasonably strong card that opened with a Steel Cage bout and also saw an Intercontinental Championship match that is famous for the wrong reasons, SummerSlam 1997 could arguably be considered a sign that the then-WWF were turning a corner in their battle with WCW. Around 250,000 homes watched the show on pay-per-view, over 100,000 more than had tuned in for the 1996 edition of SummerSlam.
