Although he signed a new contract to remain with WWE this past June,

Mike Kanellis publicly announced

that he requested his release from the company on Monday.

"Today I asked for my release from WWE," Kanellis' Twitter post began. "I want to thank everyone in the company who has helped me out and who I have shared a locker room with."

While Kanellis went on to state that he was grateful for the opportunity that WWE gave him, he expressed frustration over minimal use, feeling he needed to actually earn his pay.

"I am only 34 years old and feel I have way too much left in the tank," he added. "Working 1 day a week is just not going to cut it for me. I came to WWE to work and that opportunity does not exist right now."

Kanellis debuted along with wife Maria (in her WWE return) at the 2017 Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Their on-screen personas emphasized the power of their shared love..

Earlier in 2019, the Kanellises (or Bennetts) asked for their release from WWE, before they agreed to new deals in June. Since then, Maria announced she was pregnant, and in story, began subjecting Mike to repeated humiliation and abuse, questioning his manhood. During this time, Mike won the WWE 24/7 title on two occasions.

Kanellis' last match to date came on the September 24 edition of SmackDown, losing to Chad Gable.
