Matt Cardona has had a successful run ever since he was released by WWE back in 2020, becoming the “Indie God” and winning titles in the likes of GCW, TNA/IMPACT, NWA, and others, with appearances in the likes of AEW, MLW and more along the way. However, despite his success elsewhere, Cardona has long teased an eventual return to WWE, and recently noted that he would like to retire there… though not as his old WWE persona Zack Ryder.

He spoke to Sports Illustrated and gave a list of his wishes for the rest of his career.

“I think right now in summer 2024, being released from WWE for four years, I honestly feel like I’m closer to the WWE world title than I was when I worked for WWE. I’m proud to be the ‘Indie God,’ I’m proud to be the face of GCW, but when it’s all said and done, I want to end my career in WWE. I want to have another WrestleMania moment, I want to be in Madison Square Garden, but as Matt Cardona. Zack Ryder is dead. I am so fortunate for Zack Ryder for the highs and the lows, the good and the bad because it set me up for this. It prepared me for this.”

Cardona’s wife, Chelsea Green, is currently working in WWE. He was recently backstage at the Money in the Bank premium live event, but this was not for any form of talks or negotiations.
