With victory over Cody Rhodes at WWE WrestleMania 39, Roman Reigns extended his mammoth Undisputed WWE Universal Championship reign, with ‘The Tribal Chief’ having ruled over WWE for well over 900 days now.

Whilst many were waiting to see Rhodes take his place at the top of the mountain, we are now waiting to see just who will topple Reigns. However, former WWE Champion Kurt Angle thinks Rhodes should have ended a reign that has gone on ‘for too long’, saying the following on the Kurt Angle Show podcast:

"I'm not going to beat up on Roman Reigns because he is the man. He deserves to be," Angle said. "But we're in a time now where if you're a champion for three years, that's a little long. It's just too long because we're not in territories anymore. When you were in territories, you weren't on TV every week so fans had to come see you at the arenas. You would only be in that city one day a week. So they only saw wrestling one day a week back then when they were champion for six, eight years."

Angle continued: "Now Roman Reigns has gone on, you know, it looks like he's gonna hold the title for another few years. The thing is, he's on TV every week, sometimes twice a week, and then a pay-per-view every month. It's just a lot. I don't believe the ratings are gonna go down, but I do believe some people are going to lose interest because they're not making other wrestlers. Roman has an opportunity to make a wrestler. He could have made Cody into a megastar, which Cody is already a star, but he would have been a megastar if he would have won at WrestleMania. That's just my opinion."

This is the first reign of its length in WWE for nearly 40 years, harking back to Hulk Hogan’s first reign with the WWF Championship from 1984 until 1988, with Reigns’ win of the Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2020 kick-starting the ‘Tribal Chief’ era.

As Angle mentioned, long title runs were more prevalent in the 20th century, with the likes of Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, and Bob Backlund also having lengthy multi-year reigns at the top of the WWE.
