Back in October 2015, James Storm wrestled at two NXT tapings against Danny Burch and Adam Rose. The Cowboy opted to re-sign with IMPACT Wrestling soon after, however, and he last appeared on TV alongside Eli Drake on NWA Powerrr.

Storm revealed during a recent interview with Ryan Satin at Pro Wrestling Sheet that he was set to return to WWE after WrestleMania 36. The deal was never finalised, though, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"I was actually supposed to start with WWE right after WrestleMania," Storm said. "I was supposed to debut with them… I got the call at the Royal Rumble weekend and Paul Heyman wanted to bring me in for Raw, for Monday Night Raw. And so, they're like, 'Since the Rumble's already passed, let's build-up to WrestleMania, I mean right after WrestleMania. 'Alright, sweet. Cool.'"

"February, March and the beginning of April, I went to a doctor and took drug tests once a month. Made sure my whole system was completely clean. And I was busting my ass, I got down to 10 percent body fat. I was ready and then they're like, 'Well, we've got to put it on hold because of this whole corona deal."

At the time of WWE's initial contact, The Cowboy was under contract with NWA. Storm revealed Billy Corgan and Dave Lagana were willing to let him out of his contract early and the plan was for him to drop the NWA Tag Team Title over WrestleMania weekend and then debut with WWE following The Showcase Of The Immortals. A recent report from Fightful Select noted James Storm was no longer under contract with NWA.

The NWA World Tag Team Champion later mentioned he hasn't heard from WWE since late July, but he would be open to reuniting with Robert Roode and forming a faction with Dolph Ziggler.
