While there were fears over how GUNTHER would be treated in WWE after he departed NXT UK in late 2021, the company have presented Der Ring General as a top star since he made his way to the main roster after WrestleMania 38.

GUNTHER soon captured gold upon debuting on Friday Night SmackDown, defeating Ricochet to win the Intercontinental Championship on June 10, 2022. GUNTHER has remained champion ever since and WWE announced on Thursday that the IMPERIUM leader has made history, having passed Shelton Benjamin to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in the 21st century.

Benjamin was IC Champion for 244 days from October 2004 until June 2005 but GUNTHER's reign ticked over to 245 days on February 10. Other long-reigning modern-day champions include Shinsuke Nakamura, Randy Orton, and Cody Rhodes.

Since winning the title in June, GUNTHER has defeated the likes of Sheamus, Rey Mysterio, Braun Strowman and Ricochet again to hold onto the strap. Find out what WWE reportedly have planned for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 39 here.
