Drew McIntyre has joked he had to 'politely threaten' people backstage in WWE to ensure he was include in the upcoming tour of the United Kingdom.

McIntyre is set to return to the UK for the first time in 18 months this coming week as WWE SmackDown perform four shows across London, Newcastle, Cardiff and Glasgow, marking their first international tour since the COVID-19 Pandemic.

As a Raw superstar, McIntyre was not initially meant to be a part of the September tour, but the former WWE Champion made sure he was allowed to travel with the blue brand after some conversations with officials.

Speaking exclusively to Cultaholic's Tom Campbell, McIntyre said: "I’m so excited for the first big tour. I was not excited to see it was a SmackDown tour!

"I thought ‘oh my goodness, we have a UK tour, that’s so cool! Wait...I’m on Raw! I’m going to have to politely threaten people to make sure I’m on that thing!’ And politely threaten them I did, so I’m on the show."

Returning to the UK has greater significance for McIntyre, who has not been in his home country of Scotland since briefly returning last February to film an advertisement for WrestleMania 36 with BT Sport.

Sadly for McIntyre, the impending COVID-19 Pandemic meant he was unable to visit with family and friends during that shortened trip, something he is beyond excited to put right next week.

He continued: "The worst bit about it is I was back home 18 months ago. I got to get across a couple of places - I did my work commitments in London, I made it to Scotland, I was filming a commercial for BT Sports - I was supposed to see my family, my friends, everybody was going to meet up with me later that day.

"But I got a phone call early that morning that I had to be pulled out because of the COVID-19 situation and how serious it was becoming. So even though I was home 18 months ago, I didn’t see anybody. So I’ve not seen my family for over 18 months, so I’m going to see my family, my friends, and I get to participate across the UK for WWE as well.

"Thankfully things are calming back down, getting back to normal, and people have been able to find the positives during the negative time. Thank goodness we’re able to get back travelling again. I’m so excited to get back home."
