CM Punk has compared WWE to a 'trash' movie written by 'creatively bankrupt nincompoops' following the latest round of high-profile releases from the promotion.

WWE announced the departures of Aleister Black, Braun Strowman, Lana, Ruby Riott, Buddy Murphy and Santana Garrett on Wednesday 2 June in another major departure of talent from the main roster.

The most recent releases caught many people by surprise, in particular with Black recently re-debuted on SmackDown and Strowman being involved in a WWE Title match at WrestleMania Backlash, leading to Bloody Disgusting editor John Squires to question the company's direction.

Squires tweeted: "One thing that has consistently bummed me out about WWE in recent years is that there's been a *wealth* of incredible talent in that company, but they rarely seem to really know what to do with any of it. This latest wave of releases is a truly stunning reflection of that issue."

His message prompted a response from Punk, who walked out of WWE in 2014 and has not been afraid to be critical of the product, comparing it to a movie with a huge budget but is ultimately only put together to please one individual - hinting at WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

Punk responded: "It’s like a movie with a blockbuster budget and cast, but if it’s written by creatively bankrupt nincompoops specifically for an audience of one, in a language nobody understands anymore, it’s.....trash. But people watch it because they like movies."
