Pete Dunne is now Butch in WWE, but it could have been Bull Dempsey

Names are a funny old thing - one day you’re Pete Dunne, the next you’re Butch.
The former ‘Bruiserweight’ is the latest to suffer a high-profile name change in WWE, but according to former NXT star Bull James (fka Bull Dempsey) Bull could have originally been Butch. Saying the following during an appearance on the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast:
“There’s all this uproar about Pete Dunne being Butch. Butch was one of the names I put on my list, thinking, ‘Oh, they’ll never use this,’ but not realising that Bill DeMott’s nickname for his son was Butch, so he loved it. He kept trying to get me, like, ‘Oh, I think you should be Butch.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t wanna be Butch! Please don’t make me Butch.’”
James’ ‘list’ refers to the list of names prospective talents are asked to come up with before WWE can change their identity, with Bryan Danielson famously having ‘Lloyd Boner’ and ‘Buddy Peacock’ on his personal list.
Despite the backlash against Dunne now being Butch, James thinks the former WWE NXT UK Champion will be just fine:
“It’s funny that Pete has it now," James continued. "He’s so talented, man, that a name is not gonna hold him back. He’s awesome.”
