5 Next WWE Contracts Set To Expire
WWE Could Be Getting Less Rowdy Very Soon...
Mar 6, 2020
On March 1, 2020, former SmackDown Tag Team Champion Matt Hardy revealed his contract with WWE had expired and he was now officially a free agent.
WWE and The Broken One had been in negotiations since November 2019, but both parties were unable to come to terms on a new contract. Hardy was reportedly happy with the salary on offer, but he and WWE disagreed as to how he should be used in the future as Matt wished to revive his Broken gimmick, which the company was uninterested in pursuing.
Now, Hardy looks set to sign with All Elite Wrestling and be revealed as Dark Order's Exalted One. On the season finale of FREE THE DELETE, AEW stars The Young Bucks turned up at the Hardy Compound, and both Matt and the young promotion have released constant teasers in recent weeks.
Other WWE Superstars’ contracts are set to expire soon and with increased competition from the likes of New Japan Pro-Wrestling and AEW, wrestlers are more likely to follow in Hardy's footsteps and leave the wrestling behemoth than they have been since the collapse of WCW.
Now, according to Fightful, here are the next five WWE contracts that are set to expire.
*Rusev is rumoured to be out of contract soon, but the exact date his WWE deal expires is unknown so he has been excluded from this list.
5. The Revival – April & May 2020.
Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson of The Revival have been unhappy in WWE for some time. The Top Guys initially complained about the state of the company’s tag team division back in early 2019.
This led to the tag team being given a short push and WWE sought to capitalise on their presumed happiness by offering them new contracts. Both Superstars rejected the offer, however, and they have been on the receiving end of stop/start pushes ever since.
This has only further disillusioned the former SmackDown Tag Team Champions, and despite each being offered close to $1 million per year, The Revival look set to leave WWE when their contracts expire in April and May 2020.
4. Rey Mysterio – October 2020
Back in September 2018, Rey Mysterio re-signed with WWE after spending three years outside of the company in Lucha Underground, AAA and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He signed a two-year deal at the time, meaning unless he signs a new contract, his second stint with the company will end in October 2020.
Since returning to WWE, The Master Of the 619 has been featured prominently on both SmackDown and Monday Night Raw, enjoying two reigns as United States Champion. While he does not seem unhappy, Mysterio could make the decision to return to the independent circuit or even join up with The Elite again in All Elite Wrestling.
3. Primo Colon – October 2020
Despite being employed by WWE, Primo Colon hasn't appeared on TV since November 2018 when he competed on the Survivor Series Kickoff Show in a Raw vs. SmackDown 20-man Tag Team Elimination match.
Since then, he has moved back to Puerto Rico with his brother and tag team partner Epico Colon and worked in his father’s World Wrestling Council.
Most fans could be forgiven for forgetting Primo even worked for WWE, but the company reminded everyone when he was suspended for 30 days back in 2019 for violating the company’s wellness policy.
It seems unlikely that fans will see the former Shining Star inside a WWE ring again, however, as his contract is set to expire in October 2020.
2. Jeff Hardy – March 2020 (11/12 months added on because of injury)
Jeff Hardy and his brother Matt signed three-year deals with WWE back in 2017. They will not leave the company together, however, as time has been added onto Jeff’s contract because of his recent injury problems.
The Hardy Boyz seemed to be on course for a successful 2019, but their SmackDown Tag Team Championship reign was cut short in May 2019 as they were forced to relinquish the titles so The Charismatic Enigma could undergo knee surgery.
Fans will be able to catch Jeff in action soon though, as he revealed on WWE Backstage that he has been cleared to return to the squared circle.
1. Ronda Rousey – April 10, 2021
Ronda Rousey shocked the professional wrestling world at the 2018 Royal Rumble when she made her WWE debut. The Baddest Woman On The Planet went on to cement herself as one of the top stars in the company over the next year, going undefeated until WrestleMania 35 when she was pinned by Becky Lynch.
Rousey hasn’t been seen in the company since, and while Stephanie McMahon, Triple H, and Rousey herself have indicated she will return to the company at some point, it is unlikely to be anytime soon. This means she could see out her three year contract without stepping foot inside the squared circle again.
