Sting will wrestle for the first time in Japan since 1996 on January 22, 2023, when The Icon teams with the Great Muta and another partner at Pro Wrestling NOAH's Great Muta Final Bye-Bye show.

That mystery partner has yet to be revealed but it could end up being another AEW talent, with Sting admitting to Sports Illustrated that he is trying to convince Darby Allin to be a part of Keiji Muto's final match as Great Muta.

"I'm trying to get Darby Allin to come with me. It's such an honour, especially since that will be his last night as The Great Muta character," Sting said.

Sting and Great Muta have a long history in professional wrestling together, having both feuded and teamed together in WCW and NJPW in the 1980s and 1990s.

Such is their importance to the other's career that Great Muta asked Sting to be a part of his final match as the character.

"When it's Muta asking, I'll always say yes. Every time we speak, it's like no time has passed. I know we're older now, but it doesn't feel that way when we're together. It's such an honour. He is one of the greatest to ever do this," Sting added.

"Muta has transcended wrestling. He became a household name in Japan and America. Even last week in AEW, people remembered him. He was worried about that. 'Will they remember?' he asked me, and I said, 'Of course, they'll definitely remember.'"

Sting and Great Muta recently reunited in All Elite Wrestling at Rampage Grand Slam, with Muta making the save for The Icon during his and Darby Allin's match against Buddy Matthews and Brody King. Muta caught Matthews with the green mist and Sting followed up with the Scorpion Death Drop for the win.
