The NWA find themselves in a unique position in the independent scene, at once not reliant on partnerships with the major companies in US pro wrestling, yet featuring talents that also wrestle for the likes of AEW and IMPACT.

That’s not to say the NWA aren’t willing to work closely with major promotions, with NWA President Billy Corgan even suggesting to Metro that the company could be open to serving as a developmental territory for WWE or AEW:

“It didn’t go anywhere and that was fine – very, very good discussions, very open and cool,” began Corgan, speaking on a failed deal to get NWA programming on the WWE Network. “They certainly liked what I was trying to do, and they’ve always been cool about what I was doing in the NWA, so I remain optimistic going into the future that there might be some business there to do.

“There might be economic models where they say, ‘Take these 10 talent, let us have an oversight position, you help develop these talents. It’d be good for the NWA, it’d be good for the WWE.’

“There are lots of opportunities there! I would say the same thing even as it pertains to AEW – AEW has a tremendous amount of talent under contract, not everybody is able to be on their main shows, there might be opportunities where they wanna send those people on a developmental level.”

Before AEW as we know it came to be, the NWA worked with The Elite at All In in 2018, with Cody Rhodes defeating Nick Aldis for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship at the landmark indy event. WWE worked with the old NWA in 1998, with a mini NWA invasion occurring on WWE TV.
