New Japan Pro-Wrestling announced during the Best Of The Super Juniors 27 and World Tag League Finals that the 49th Anniversary Show will be held on March 4, 2021 at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan.

The event has traditionally been held at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan, the venue of NJPW's first-ever card on March 6, 1972.

The show has been main evented by a match between the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion in recent years. In 2018, Kazuchika Okada defeated Will Ospreay. The Ariel Assassin came up short again on the 47th Anniversary Show against IWGP Heavyweight Champion Jay White.

This year's 48th Anniversary Show was scheduled to be headlined by Tetsuya Naito vs. stablemate Hiromu Takahashi but the event was cancelled because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Other matches on the scrapped card included Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay, SHO & YOH vs. EVIL, SANADA, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI, and Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi & Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Zack Sabre Jr., Taichi & DOUKI.
