Lex Luger Feels Bad About Walking Out On WWE In 1995

We all know the scene; Lex Luger in a puffy shirt, striding into the Mall of America on the first ever WCW Monday Nitro as Eric Bischoff wonders out loud what the WWF main eventer was doing in the building. A monumental moment in wrestling history, as the first big middle finger from WCW to WWF in the Monday Night Wars.

But now, Luger himself has admitted regret for the way that he left Vince McMahon and company in 1995. Speaking on Sean Waltman’s Pro Wrestling 4 Life podcast, Luger said that Eric Bischoff needed Luger’s return to be a surprise, so The Total Package kept Vince McMahon in the dark as a result:

“It was hard to keep a secret," started Luger "so Eric wanted to be totally secretive. I was still negotiating on a handshake to stay in WWE, and for me to walk out there and not give any notice to Vince, looking back now, I wish I hadn’t done that. I did what I thought was best at the time for my career. Me, myself, and I. Hopefully if I’d have done it again, I wouldn’t have done that to Vince. I felt, even back then, felt really bad about that.”

Luger had wrestled for Vince the night before his Nitro debut, working a house show with Shawn Michaels against Owen Hart and Yokozuna, a detail which made Luger’s jump even more shocking.
