Kazuchika Okada Describes The IWGP Double Title As The Second-Biggest Mistake In NJPW History

While over a year has passed since the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Titles were first held by one person, Kazuchika Okada's ill feelings towards the concept have not waned.

The Rainmaker expressed opposition to the idea before it came into existence and he called the Double Championship the second-biggest mistake in New Japan Pro-Wrestling history during an interview on NJPW World.

"In my opinion, the double title was a misstep that people are trying to forget," Okada said. "What was the point? What did it leave people with? I only remember Naito posing under the fireworks at Jingu [Stadium]. That's the only thing I recall from the double title. No match really stands out to me from that run.

"But the blame can't be totally placed on the double title concept. It can be argued that the pandemic hindered the idea. But thinking through 49 years of company history, maybe it wasn't the biggest mistake, but it's probably the second. The second-biggest gaff that should have been avoided."

The IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental Double Championship was in existence for over a year, but both belts have since been unified into the IWGP World Heavyweight Title. Okada challenged for that championship earlier today when he went one on one with Shingo Takagi at Dominion.
