Keiji Muto, AKA The Great Muta, is set to hang up his boots early next year and is currently in the process of wrestling the final few matches of an extraordinary career.

Despite having been in the business for close to 40 years, Muto has never stepped inside a WWE ring.

In an interview with Wrestling Inc., the former IWGP Heavyweight and AJPW Triple Crown champion said he has no regrets about not competing for WWE.

While the question of whether a WWE run was ever a realistic option was left unanswered, Muto said: "I just don't understand this. [WWE]'s way of thinking was so different at that time."

Muto's greatest success came in his homeland, but he is no stranger to mainstream American professional wrestling.

He first showed up in the NWA/WCW in the mid-80s, where he helped popularise the Moonsault (which he used as a finisher). The former NWA World Television and WCW Tag Team Champion continued to sporadically wrestle for WCW until 2000.

As well as WCW, Muto has performed for Ring of Honor and TNA. He recently made a surprise appearance on AEW Rampage, coming to the aid of ex-rival Sting.
