Awesome Kong Taking A Break From AEW
She's going to feel the GLOW...
Feb 5, 2020
After not competing for almost two years, Awesome Kong returned to professional wrestling back in May 2019 as she debuted in All Elite Wrestling at Double Or Nothing. Since then, she has been Brandi Rhodes' enforcer in the Nightmare Collective and been portrayed as somewhat of a powerhouse, winning all three of her singles matches in under 60 seconds.
The former WWE Superstar is set to take a leave of absence from AEW, however. During last night's episode of Dark, Kong disparaged Mel for her loss to Hikaru Shida. After slapping her on the back of the head a few times, Mel snapped and attacked her ally. Luther then grabbed Kong from behind, so Mel could deliver some body shots.
Kong was then flung into the barricade and suffered a leg drop on the steel steps, causing AEW's medical team to rush to the ring.
After the episode,
the young promotion announced on Twitterthat the former IMPACT Knockouts Champion suffered "serious injuries" from the attack and would be out of action for an indefinite period.
They tweeted: "Awesome Kong Medical Update: on this week’s episode of #AEWDark Kong suffered serious injuries at the hands of Mel & Luther. We do not know when or if she will return to action."
While the "serious injuries" are very much in the spirit of kayfabe, Kong will be taking some time away from the promotion to film the final season of GLOW. She plays Tamme "Welfare Queen" Dawson in the Netflix series.
