Tony Khan Reveals Why He Would Not Let CM Punk Relinquish The AEW World Title
An Interim AEW World Champion provided an exciting opportunity for Tony Khan
Jun 9, 2022
Although CM Punk is currently out of action with a "busted wheel", The Second City Saviour did not relinquish the AEW World Championship, with Punk noting that AEW President Tony Khan told him under no circumstances was he allowed to just let go of the title.
Instead, Punk will remain AEW World Champion and an interim champ will be crowned in his absence at Forbidden Door. Jon Moxley defeated Kyle O'Reilly on last night's Dynamite to advance to the June 26 pay-per-view and The Purveyor Of Violence will face the winner of Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Hirooki Goto from NJPW Dominion on June 12.
Speaking about his decision to keep the AEW World Title on Punk, Tony Khan noted MMA as his inspiration before he mentioned the interim title allows AEW to set up something exciting.
"Based on what happens in real fights, in the world of fighting, this is what you do. You have a great champion, and if they are injured, you name an interim champion and set up an exciting unification fight. We have a great chance to set something exciting up," Khan said on Busted Open Radio.
There is no word on when CM Punk will be back in action following his surgery. He will face the Interim AEW World Champion to crown an undisputed champ when he does come back.
