Suggestion Made For Sting To Challenge For The AEW World Title In His Retirement Match
Matt Hardy intrigued by the idea of Sting challenging for the AEW World Title in his retirement match
Nov 2, 2023
After wrestling for five decades, Sting will call it a career and retire at Revolution 2024. Sting announced his plans to retire in recent weeks and The Icon will spend his final months as an active wrestler alongside his longtime rival and real-life friend Ric Flair.
There is no word on what Sting's retirement match will be but Matt Hardy stated on his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast that nobody deserves a better retirement than the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
"I mean, he deserves it. It's gonna be sad to see him go. He's one of the guys I look forward to seeing every week, you know, whenever he is at television. What an amazing dude. What an amazing wrestler. What an amazing run. I can't say enough good things about Steve Borden. Sting is just fantastic from head to toe. God bless him. He's had this incredible run, this incredible longevity. He very much deserves to. I'll hate not seeing him around. I hope he still does come around, even just as a character, if he's not wrestling at all," Hardy said.
For Sting's final match, Matt Hardy believes it should be a singles encounter and Hardy admitted he is intrigued by the idea of Sting challenging for the AEW World Championship in his retirement match.
"That's an interesting question. I would love to see his last match be against a top star. I would love to see it be against a Kenny Omega or MJF. Considering it's AEW, it would not surprise me if it's against Darby Allin. I can see him, too, being cool with that in an effort to try and leave something special for Darby when he's getting ready to step away," Hardy added.
"I think it would be a hell of a deal, too, if it was his last match and say MJF is still the champion at that point if it was him vs. MJF. One last chance on one last night to try and win the AEW Heavyweight Title before he retires. That's intriguing as well."
MJF recently made history, becoming the longest-reigning AEW World Champion of all time. Sting may want to face or team with Darby Allin for his retirement match as they have been linked since Sting's AEW debut in December 2020.
