Talk of a working relationship between All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling has been around since the American promotion was established in January 2019. AEW has even tried to forge a relationship in the past but NJPW blew them off, thinking the company would likely fail.

Talk has continued since Harold Meij announced his resignation as NJPW president, especially as he was seen as a major stumbling block to any formal arrangement. One top AEW name previously told Dave Meltzer that Meij "was an idiot when it came to understanding the business."

Meltzer reported in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Tony Khan has been in talks with Rocky Romero regularly as of late in the hope of opening doors to New Japan. The AEW president reportedly feels the odds of establishing a relationship are better now that Harold Meij has left NJPW.

AEW has shown its willingness to work with other promotions in recent months. The company has exchanged talent with the National Wrestling Alliance and AAA and Kenny Omega is set to appear on next week's edition of IMPACT on AXS TV with Don Callis.
