The Young Bucks almost had a different role at the joint Forbidden Door pay-per-view between AEW and NJPW on Sunday, June 26.

Matt and Nick Jackson were in action at the show as they rejoined Bullet Club for one night and teamed with El Phantasmo to take on the Dudes With Attitudes in Sting, Darby Allin, and Shingo Takagi. The Young Bucks didn't have a successful evening, though, and they were ultimately defeated by the babyfaces.

A multi-man match wasn't originally pitched for The Bucks, however, and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated that NJPW Booker Gedo originally wanted Matt and Nick Jackson to win the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Titles. The idea was, obviously, scrapped and The Bucks were "on board" with that decision since they thought it was a "cool story" for FTR to be the IWGP, ROH, and AAA Tag Team Champions.

FTR captured the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships at Forbidden Door, winning a Winner Takes All Three-Way against Roppongi Vice, and The United Empire's Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan.

While they may not be IWGP tag champs, The Young Bucks are still the reigning AEW World Tag Team Champions in their second reign with the gold.
