In late 2022, MJF almost seemed to show a change of heart, with the ‘Salt of the Earth’ toning down some of the more outwardly heelish aspects of his persona leading into Full Gear.

Coming out of Full Gear and MJF is the de facto number one heel in AEW, having cheated to win the AEW World Championship at Full Gear, before attacking a defenceless William Regal on a recent edition of Dynamite.

Many had spoken of the potential of having MJF be a top face in AEW, and a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter suggests that there were considerations to turning MJF face coming out of Full Gear. Meltzer himself thought that AEW had a good chance of pulling the trigger but would now have to wait as the window of opportunity for an organic fully fledged face turn for MJF has seemingly closed.

With CM Punk out of AEW, and with Hangman Page absent due to a concussion and Kenny Omega suspended heading into Full Gear, there was a clear gap for a full-on top babyface in the company, with Jon Moxley having occupied that spot, despite his character being somewhat more akin to a tweener.
