The July 20 Fyter Fest edition of AEW: Dynamite is set to feature a Barbed Wire Deathmatch between Eddie Kingston and Chris Jericho, with the Jericho Appreciation Society set to be suspended above the ring in a shark cage.

Whilst shark cages in wrestling are not a new concept, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radiothat AEW were asked to use the gimmick by broadcast partner Warner Bros. Discovery:

“So we’re going to have a bloodbath on TV, well they [AEW] do that. The shark thing, I guess, is the gimmick having to do with Shark Week. Discovery asked them to do a tie-in, and so they came up with a match to do a tie-in in. That’s a week from Wednesday,” said Meltzer.

AEW have never featured a shark cage before, but the concept has been used many times in the past by WWE and WCW amongst others, with Chris Jericho himself having been locked in the cage at Royal Rumble 2017.

Shark Week is one of Discovery’s banner events, and aside from AEW’s tie-in, it has been announced that the Rock will serve as the ‘master of ceremonies’ for the 34th annual event.
