Talk of a working relationship between New Japan Pro-Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling has been around since the young promotion was founded in January 2019. The likes of Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, "Hangman" Adam Page and Chris Harrington reportedly tried to forge a relationship between the two companies ahead of AEW's launch, but New Japan blew off the idea as they thought the promotion would likely fail.

Both sides have since hinted they are willing to work with each other, but Harold Meij was perceived as a major stumbling block to any final agreement.

Meij announced his resignation as NJPW President/CEO earlier this week and Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that AEW is hopeful of forging a business relationship, but they don't know much about incoming president Takami Ohbari.

"I'm not sure yet," Tony Khan said. "But my initial gut feeling is it could be good."

An AEW top name said: "No idea, we want to. But he (Meij) was an idiot when it came to understanding the business. Hopefully, things will change now."
