Josh Alexander is one of TNA Wrestling’s biggest stars, but eyebrows were raised when TNA opted to enact an option year of his contract and retain Alexander’s services, with the wording of the announcement suggesting it was a TNA decision to keep Alexander in the company, not Alexander’s.

Alexander had reportedly told TNA he didn't wish to re-sign in order to explore other options, before the company legally exercised their right to retain his services. Alexander has since spoken of his thoughts about the contract extension, telling Fightful he is not being ‘held hostage’:

"I signed the contract two years ago. I've seen people on Twitter and stuff like that being like, 'Josh is being held hostage and all this stuff', and I want to dispel that. First and foremost, at the end of the day, I want to be able to look myself in the mirror with my head held high so that I carry myself as a professional. Did I explore the option of them not extending my contract? Sure. It never hurts to ask, but I signed that contract and I'll uphold my end of the bargain there and stay here for another year and see what happens after that. It's always a possibility that I negotiate a long term extension before then. Anthem has already had interest in doing that. At the end of the day, I think it would have been cool to kind of see what was out there and see what I could do in the wrestling business right now between, you know, other companies and stuff like that if there's interest because that's not something I've ever been able to do. The ball was in their court. It was a team option, they picked it up, and I'm happy to stay for another year and do the things I've been doing for the past five years," revealed Alexander.
