John Cena: "WWE Doesn't Need Me"
We still see Cena, it's just in other places...
Jun 10, 2019
John Cena has not wrestled since being pinned in a four-way match on Raw by Finn Balor on January 14. As far as WWE appearances go, we last saw "Big Match John" at WrestleMania 35, verbally eviscerating Elias with a bone-cutting freestyle from his "Thuganomics" days of yore.
Otherwise, Cena's been preoccupied with television and movie endeavors, including hosting Nickelodeon's reboot of Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, which premieres Monday evening.
While promoting the show in
an interview with The Wrap, Cena spoke about WWE and his eternal connection with the company that gave him his biggest career breaks. However, he believes that the sports entertainment giant can do just fine without him around.
“They don’t need me," Cena says. "I am grateful for everyone who says ‘we miss you,’ and there was a time when I could genuinely say from a financial standpoint that they needed me, that time is up.”
Cena notes that he recently turned 42, and while he still watches WWE with regularity, "...the talent is getting faster and more precise, and I’ve always been referred to as ‘unorthodox’ so I’m not exactly the most precise."
