Eddie Kingston is a champion in New Japan Pro-Wrestling!

The Mad King challenged KENTA for the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship in the semi-main event of NJPW STRONG Independence Day night two on Wednesday, July 5.

It appeared that Kingston was going to lose following a ref bump, with KENTA decking him with the DEFY Championship after Kingston himself refused to use the NJPW STRONG Openweight belt to his advantage. Kingston managed to survive, though, and he kicked out of the Double Foot Stomp soon after before he scored his own near fall after two Urakens.

Kingston then went on to block a Go To Sleep attempt and he proceeded to repeatedly kick KENTA in the face before he landed another Uraken and put KENTA away with a Sheer Drop Brainbuster to score the victory.

A clearly emotional Kingston then celebrated with Homicide at ringside after the match, with both men jumping and hugging together. Kingston then couldn't hold back his emotions and The Mad King received loud applause as he spontaneously burst into tears and headed backstage.

Today's victory gives Eddie Kingston the biggest title win of his career. The AEW star is set to continue wrestling in Japan and he will take part in the G1 Climax 33 between July 15 and August 13.
