Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has stated that "the door is open" for Rey Mysterio to return to WWE on a more permanent basis.

The three-time World Champion was one of the shocking returns at last Sunday's Royal Rumble event, with the pop from the crowd demolishing any lingering memories of the 2014 event - Mysterio, through no fault of his own, was booed out of the building after entering in the number 30 spot when the majority of fans wanted Daniel Bryan in the role.

Even though he was only brought in for a one-shot deal, Meltzer claims the company is open to doing more with him. Being one of the biggest names in the world means that Rey is booked up for the foreseeable future, with the likes of 5 Star Wrestling planning to use him a lot more this year. Any full-time return wouldn't be able to happen until Mysterio has honoured all of his confirmed bookings, although the odd sporadic appearance before then could still take place.

Since leaving WWE, Mysterio has kept his reputation alive by turning out for promotions all over the world, with his most notable appearances coming in Lucha Underground where Big Dave claims he was making $1 million, even though he was working limited dates.

It's not hard to see why WWE are keen for Mysterio to return. Following the massive reception, The Master of the 619 didn't disappoint. Even though he's 43-years-old and has been wrestling since 1989, he appears to be in tip-top physical condition and very much capable of doing all of the high-flying moves that brought him so much success.

While we're here, Meltzer also noted that Mysterio was pencilled in to face Alberto El Patron at Impact's Redemption PPV in April but a deal couldn't be reached. Austin Aries will face Patron instead.
